Clean lines, minimalist colour palette, some bricks for a little texture. Yes, my idea of photo heaven. The funny thing is I didn’t really notice the star when I took the shot — I was more drawn by the clean, simple composition. Those stars are all over buildings in DC and the surrounding area. Found this explanation on a photo on Flickr:

I believe these were used to designate strong points in the building frame where there was steel rod reinforcement behind the wood or brick. Furniture could then be more easily hoisted up to the narrow floors and not through narrow stair cases.(source)

DC Metro XI

Yes, my obsession with the DC metro continues. This is shot standing at the edge of the platform. At the base of the wall on the far side of the tracks they have these grills lit up from underneath, with sections where bulbs have burned out. The zoom view on this shot shows this photo with a second shot that essentially has the reverse lighting.

The American’s love invading. Iraq, Afghanistan, the Canadian Embassy in DC to watch Olympic hockey games. Here I thought the Embassy would be a great, safe place to watch the game amidst an overwhelmingly pro-Canadian crowd, but at least half the crowd was supporting the US (it’s hard to tell for sure, since they’re so much louder by nature).

Here’s a 17-second slice of hell we Canadians endured when they tied the game with a little over 24 seconds to play in regulation. Thank god we got it done in OT.

DC Snow

I would not have taken this photo living in Montreal, where I was born (in the aftermath of a winter storm) and where this kind of thing happens all the time, sometimes in April. But this is my fourth winter here in DC, and scenes like this are rare. I will confess that I very much wanted to flip this image and call it “The Mark of Snorro,” but that would be cheating, and where horrible puns are concerned, there can be no cheating.

I took this gallery of our 2006 trip off the site when I overhauled the code and put it onto WordPress.
